Economic Contributions made by the Alcohol Beverage Industry in Maryland

bulletThe Industry employs over 100,000 persons: 4% of the total Maryland work force and 20% of the wholesale/retail work force.
bulletThe Industry annual payrolls are in excess of $2.3 billion, most of which are used to purchase various consumer products and services.
bulletThe Industry collects $126 million in state sales tax revenues annually on over $2.5 billion of retail sales from on-premise and off-premise retailers.
bulletThe Industry accounts for $27 million in state excise taxes and fees annually
bulletThe Industry provides over $25 million in county revenues annually from license fees and dispensary returns.
bulletThe Industry provides $57.5 million in county piggyback income taxes.
bulletThe Industry accounts for $235.5 million in total tax revenues to the state and counties, exclusive of real property taxes and state income taxes.
bulletThe Industry provides hundreds of millions of dollars in real estate taxes on property used by the 100,000 industry employees of the 6,700 retail licenses, 64 manufacturer licenses, and 87 wholesaler licenses.
bulletThe Industry accounts for over 47% of all Lottery sales which provided almost $1.3 billion in sales to the state for fiscal year 2002.
