Just
the Facts:
UNDERAGE
DRINKING
 | 57,125 have a serious alcohol
problem |
 | 84.5% (48,164 kids) don't get
treatment |
 | 65% of underage youth who drink
obtain alcohol from family and friends. Equally
important, only 7% of youth report that they
obtained alcohol from retailers who failed to check
for identification. |
|
 |
 | According to the National Institute
on Drub Abuse (NIDA), first use of alcohol typically
begins around the age of 13. |
 | While all 50 states and DC have a
zero tolerance policy for youth under 21, 21% of
16-20 year old drivers involved in fatal crashes had
a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level of .10 or
higher in 1999. Fourteen percent of these young
drivers were involved in fatal crashes where the BAC
lavel was .10 or higher. |
|
UNDERAGE
SMOKING:
 |
 | 4.5 million teenagers, ages 12 to
17, smoke cigarettes |
 | 50 percent of those who smoke begin
by age 14, and 90 percent begin before age 19. |
|
 | More than 12,000 Maryland youth
under the age of 18 become daily smokers each year,
said Salisbury, a walking compendium of facts. |
 | Each day more than 4,000 kids try
their first cigarette and more than 2,000 teens
under 18 become new, regular smokers. This means
there are more than 730,000 new underage daily
smokers each year. This year, more than 377,000
teens already have become regular smokers. Of these,
120,000 will die prematurely from their
addiction. |
